These wondrous creatures were actually quite hard to spot amidst the tundra wasteland. Between their ragged white coats and the bright sun glistening off the snow, they were virtually invisible at a distance. But as I snowshoed closer, I was able crouch low and observe the various specimens. The beasts always saw me of course, this white desert offers little covering and their many nostrilled nose seemed quite adept at picking up scents, but I made myself small so as not to appear threatening. The massive, fused horns atop their heads could deliver a nasty blow, that is, if they didn't decide to just trample me with their colossal bulk. Their eyes looked sad however, knowing. Perhaps decades of living in the pitiless tundra has hardened them. The melancholy of the adults was sharply contrasted by the rambunctiousness of the young, who were delightfully cute in their fresh, fluffy coats.
