"Where Is My Mind?" – Pixies
listen here
I came across one of these goblins diving deep off the northwest coast, and what an experience it was. At first I only saw a faint, mysterious glow, but as I slowly kicked closer the horrific toothy visage became clear to me. I almost turned tail and ran, but the ghostly creature seemed to just float there, as if in a trance. Steeling myself, I inched closer in the name of exploration, and took more careful note of its anatomy. It appeared to have three sawlike jaws, with two fleshy nets between them. The "nets" I believe were sifting tiny organisms and food particles from the water. On a later exploration I actually did see two of them using their jaws as weapons; they had squeezed them tightly together and were using them like swords in a duel for the right to mate with a female. I have a hunch a female uses her jaws to deny mates or protect her eggs once she lays them. Anyway, on this first encounter I only saw this one close and tuck its jaws back into its mouth to dart away from me when I got too close. I'm glad it didn't try to sword fight me instead, because its jaws are about as long as I am! The function of its glowing "eye" is still unknown to me. The brightness of it may communicate fertility, but this is mere speculation.
